Monastery of Moni Gionias in Kolimbari

Monastery Gonias

The Moni Gonias Monastery, Kolimbari The Moni Gonias Monastery is located 20 km westwards of Chania in West Crete in the Village of Kolimbari. It was built between 1618 and 1634 at the foot of the Ropopous Peninsular. Today, the monastery houses some important 15th and 17th century Cretan icons. The Orthodox Academy of Crete, an important religious foundation, is close by the Monastery. Kolimbari is one of the last fishing villages of Crete. In the tavernas you can eat fresh fish and seafood.

The Village Spilia is located 3 km behind our village Kolimbari in heading south. In the summer time the village offers, on the 'PLATIA' (village square), "Greek nights" with live music and dances. Among the large plane trees you can enjoy the local wine and traditional pastries. The Church of Spilia is also worth seeing, unfortunately, the church is almost closed, you ´ll try it! Further up on the hillside of the village Spilia is the Cave "Marathokefala", here you´ll see a small limestone cave, the cave church of Agios Ioanis and a fantastic panoramic views over the bay of Kolimbari.

The hillside village "Vouves" is located 7 km southward of our Village Kolimbari. In the village square enthroned the "oldest olive tree" of the world. Directly behind it is a small heritage museum. The path is the goal, it gives you great views of the Gulf of Kolimbari, you´ll see a typical crete landscape with wineyards and olive groves.

Agia Trida Monastery

The monastery Agia Triada is the largest monastery of Crete, which is managed large. Organic olive oil and organic wine from the highest quality is produced here! The monastery was founded in the 16th century by the brothers venizianischen Tzangarola. They converted to the Orthodox faith. Therefore the monastery is also called “Moni Tzangarolou”. After a few steps, you will see the monastery courtyard. The entrance is through a large gate. There is also a monastery shop where you can buy all products  produced in the monastery.

The water park "Limnoupolis" offers the visitors a paradise all about the matter "water”. It´s located 8 km southward of Chania Town. Limnoupolis is located on a beautiful, emerald area 8 km from the city of Chania near the community of Varipetro. It occupies a total area of 100 yards The main stage of the park will impress the visitor not only with its remarkable architecture but mainly with the fabulous "water amusement games", the pools and the exotic artificial river.

After riding you can relax in the hotel and you can enjoy the traditional cuisine of the hotel. 9 Km Southwards is the Coast Village Frangokastello with his dunes. Here you will see one of the most beautiful beaches of Crete.

Boat Trip with the “Agia Irini” emarkation from Chania Harbour. We can recommend the M / S Irini. It is located in Chania Harbour and makes several daily trips. The “Agia Irini” offers also snorkeling tours and sun set tours. Enjoy the embiance of an old former U.S. Marine Boot from 1928. We can also recommend the boot trip to the lagoon of Balos. With the boot “Gramvousa Express” you can make a day trip to the lagoon of balos. With your rented car you have to go to the harbour of “Kaliviani-Kastelli” where the “Gramvousa Express” starts. You can buy your tickets directly at the harbour or in your hotel. The boot goes around the Gramvousa Peninsula, makes a stop in an old pirate-beach ( where you can visit an old castle) and goes then to the lagoon of balos.

Church of St. Michael

The Church of St. Michael is located 5 km southwards of Kolimbari in the village "Episkopi". It dates from the 9th century and has an unique dome. The church is built on the site of an early Christian basilica. It was expanded in the Venetian period as a monastery. After many years of restoration the church can be visited again.
